Dougherty & Co initiates coverage on RealD (NYSE: RLD) with a Buy. PT $30.
Dougherty analyst says, "According to the Motion Picture Association of America, 2010 global box office receipts increased 8% to an all-time record of $31.8 billion. Driving the growth was the rising popularity of 3D movies, as 2010 had the benefit of backto-back 3D blockbusters – Avatar and Alice in Wonderland and the higher ticket prices exhibitors charge for 3D admissions. Revenue from 3D accounted for $2.2 billion, or 21% of the domestic box office, and 6 of the top 10 domestic grosses were 3D films...At the same time, exhibitors across the globe are undergoing a massive technology shift from film to digital, enabling the broad scale rollout of 3D cinema. According to Screen Digest, of the roughly 122,000 screens currently in operation on a global basis, 57,000 will be converted to digital by the end of this year and the installed base of digital screens will grow to 86,000 by 2013...Behind these trends stands RealD, the company best positioned to profit from the proliferation of 3D cinema."
