Aeropostale (ARO) Disappoints With Q4 EPS, Guidance; Shares Drop

Aeropostale Inc. (NYSE: ARO) shares are in a freefall after the company reported disappointing fourth-quarter earnings and guided for a weak current quarter and full year.

The clothing retail chain operator reported fourth-quarter earnings of 95 cents per share, 2 cents below the analyst estimate of 97 cents per share.

Revenue for the company rose 5 percent to $839.3 million in the three month period ended January 29, topping the consensus of $836.58 million.

Same store sales, or sales at locations open at least one year, fell 3 percent in the period for Aeropostale, which reported comps up 9 percent in the same quarter last year.

"Our performance in the back-half was below our expectations," Thomas P. Johnson, Chief Executive Officer, said. "The teen retail environment was highly promotional and we believe that we did not execute to our full potential. Moving into 2011, we recognize our opportunities and are more determined than ever to show the power of the Aeropostale brand."

Looking forward, Aeropostale sees earnings for the first quarter in the range of 35-38 cents per share and $2.20-$2.40 per share, below the consensus of 43 cents and $2.57 respectively.

Shares of Aeropostale are down 7.43 percent to $22.80 in aftermarket movement on Thursday.
