Piper Jaffray analysts said Thursday that the technology sector is becoming stronger than it has been in over a decade, with a company like Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) surpassing the influence of Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC).

With the rise of mobile technology, companies like Qualcomm are positioned to benefit as devices like smartphones and tablets displace personal computers and the need for microprocessors made by companies like Intel.

“In the 4th wave, connectivity is king and QCOM and the carriers such as AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) are positioned to benefit as are tower companies like American Tower (NYSE: AMT)," the firm said on Thursday.
