Apple (AAPL) Loses App Market Share to Android, Others in 2010 - IHS

According to IHS (NYSE: IHS), Apple is still atop the app marketplace, but competitors are making big share gains.

Data for 2010 shows that Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) App Store grew 131.9% to revs of $1.782 billion, commanding an 82.7% market share in the process.

Coming in second place was Research in Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) App World at $165 million in revs, a 360.3% jump from 2009. Market share for the Waterloo, ON-based techie jumped 340 basis points to 7.7%. Third was Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) Ovi Store, gaining 719.4% from $13 million in 2009 to $105 million in 2010, representing a 4.9% market share.

Finally, Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android Market saw a smashing 861.5% jump in revs from $11 million to $102 million, capturing 4.7% of market share in the process.

The data points to a basic fact: more consumers are using apps, and the number is growing right along with smartphone and tablet sales. The app market grew 160.2% last year from $828 million in 2009 to $2.2 billion in 2010. IHS is expecting the market to gain again in 2011, albeit at a slower pace. The firm is looking for an 81.5% increase to $3.9 billion in sales.

Notably, Apple's market share lost ground in 2010, from 92.8% in 2009. The data corresponds to what is being seen in the marketplace: Android, et al, are surfacing as acceptable alternatives to Apple's iOS.

Data from IHS didn't say which sales were made on tablets and which were on smartphones.
