Notable ETF Movers of the Day 02/15: GLD, VXX, XLF Higher; XLE, MOO, USO Lower
Gainers
Receders
- SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD) up 0.76% to $133.95. Investors making their way into gold today as January inflation in the U.K. came in at 4%, double what the Bank of England was looking for, and a 30 basis point jump from 3.7% in December.
- iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) up 1.15% to $28.05. The CBOE VIX near-term volatility index is trading about 3.8% higher today, following retail sales that failed to meet the Street's expectations. Business inventories also grew 0.8% in December, about 20 basis points better than expected, which may mean businesses seeing slower sales.
- Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 0.15% to $17.11. Slightly higher today following an announcement today of a merger between the NYSE and Deutsche Boerse. Additionally, many hedge funds are submitting their 13F quarterly filings to the U.S. SEC, many showing shifts in financial holdings.
Receders
- Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) down 0.99% to $74.99. Led by Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) today, which is down over 2% on slightly increased volume, which reported that additions to its proved reserves in 2010 totaled 3.5 billion oil-equivalent barrels, replacing 209% of production. Otherwise, China's inflation grew 4.9% in January, which missed expectations of 5.4%, but increased from 4.6% in December, have some wondering whether China officials will make further moves to slow the rapidly expanding economy, potentially curbing demand for oil and other natural resources.
- Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) down 1.82% to $56.72. Feeling a pinch today following President Obama's budget proposal yesterday, which would see spending for the USDA cut by about $3 billion in 2012. Potash Corp. (NYSE: POT) and Monsanto are leading the ETF lower today, each down better than 3% today.
- United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 0.72% to $35.62. Though higher early in the session, oil has since declined as investors and traders chew over economic data, which is pointing to a slight slowdown in the U.S. economy as retail sales came in about half of the consensus and the NAHB housing market index came in about a point below what was expected, at 16.
