Notable ETF Movers of the Day 01/24: SMH, XLE, TAN Higher; USO, UUP, VXX Lower

Gainers

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 1.19% to $34.14. Positive sentiment in the tech sector today as Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) announced
    a $10 billion common stock buyback coupled with an increased dividend.
    INTC shares are up 1.2% today.

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 0.46% to $70.42. Led by Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) today, following a solid fourth quarter earnings report out of the company. HAL posted adjusted EPS of $0.68 on revs of $5.2 billion, compared to cosensus EPS of $0.63 with revs of $4.9 billion.

  • Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) up 1.86% to $8.23. Seeing some buying today as Goldman Sachs added First Solar
    (Nasdaq: FSLR) to its Buy List, with a $165 price target.
    FSLR shares are up 3.6% today, just about in-line with others in the sector.


Receders
  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.15% to $37.08. The ETF is lower today following news that Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi hinted that OPEC may begin to bolster oil production in order to meet increasing fuel demand. The comments signal that the Saudis aren't interested in increasing oil prices. March 11 contracts are down about 1.1% to $88.12 on Comex.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.36% to $22.41. The euro is stronger versus the U.S. dollar today following upbeat comments from ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet. Trichet said that the central bank would respond to inflation by increasing interest rates, making the euro an attractive investment when compared to the dollar and Japanese yen.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 1.52% to $31.74. The CBOE VIX is trading higher today following positive earnings data as well as positive news out of the tech sector. No economic data for the U.S. was released. The VIX is down 1.52%, at last check, to $18.19.
