Notable ETF Movers of the Day 12/10: XLE, SPY/QQQQ, TAN Higher; VXX, UNG, USO Lower

  • Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLE) up 0.08% to $65.68. Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:
    OXY) is bolstering shares today as the company announced a href="http://www.streetinsider.com/Corporate+News/Occidental+%28OXY%29+Divests+Argentine+Assets%3B+to+Buy+Oil%2C+Gas+Operations+in+Texas%2C+North+Dakota+for+%243.2B%3B+Raises+Qtr.+Dividend+by+21%25+to+46cShare/6155471.html">$3.2
    billion divestiture of their South Texas and North Dakota oil and gas operations.

  • SPDR S&P 500 (NYSE: SPY) up 0.19% to
    $123.99 and PowerShares QQQ (Nasdaq: QQQQ) up 0.21% to $54.25. The SPY hit a 52-week high of
    $124.21 and the Cubes aren't that far off, as December has really felt the holiday cheer this year, with the S&P up 4.6% on the month and the Nasdaq also up about 5%. Positive news from retailers and autos, strong consumer trends, and decent economic data have all been contributors thus far. Today, shares might be a little stronger on recent M&A activity, signaling that firms are now opening up their pocketbooks.

  • Guggenheim Solar (NYSE: TAN) up 0.67% to $7.52. Led by First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) today, which might be experiencing a technical move above $136. Shares touched just below the mark over the last several sessions (December 7 and December 9), and finally had enough gusto today to break above the resistance level.


Receders

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 1.06% to $38.13. Should the VXX volatility indicator close below $38.54, it wil have officially closed lower ech day since the end of November. VXX closed at $49.29 on November 03, and the ETF has slid nearly 22% since then.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) down 0.77% to $6.05. Futures are down a little today as the severe cold that was initially expected is now expected to be more moderate going into next week. The slightly warmer weather will cause consumers to draw off less nat gas to keep heated.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 0.98% to $37.57. Oil prices are higher ahead of an OPEC meeting this weekend.
    Many expect production levels to remain flat, with Saudi oil minister Ali Maimi saying that a price between $70 and $90 is tolerable for consumers.
