'Hacktivists' Avenge Wikileaks; Freeze MasterCard (MA), Visa (V) Corp. Websites

December 8, 2010 4:49 PM EST
Both Visa's (NYSE: V) corporate website, Visa.com, and MasterCard's (NYSE: MA) corporate website, MasterCard.com, were cyberattacked today, sending millions wondering why the websites were acting up.

MasterCard (MC) smartly put out two press releases today, assuring customers that the site was experiencing "heavy traffic" and they were "working to restore normal speed of service." No impact on cardholders ability to conduct transactions was expected. They later issued a release stating that they had made, "significant progress in restoring full-service to its corporate website. [Their] core processing capabilities have not been compromised and cardholder account data has not been placed at risk."

Visa has yet to release a statement to shareholders/customers.

The hackers, going by @Anon_Operation on Twitter) than announced that they would be attacking Visa.com in one hour (which, at this writing, was written 'about 1 hour ago', according to Twitter).

Recent checks indicate that, yes, Visa.com is still down. Mastercard.com is up, but moving slowly.

The website for "Operation Payback" is disabled (http://www.anonops.net/), but hashtags on their Tweets indicate that the attacks have something to do with WikiLeaks. They also use a hashtag #DDoS for distributed denial-of-service.

The group also took down Swiss payment transaction company PostFinance yesterday.
