Notable ETF Movers of the Day 10/29: SMH, MOO, UNG Higher; USO, FXI, TAN Lower

Gainers

  • Semiconductor HOLDRs (NYSE: SMH) up 0.48% to $29.52. Maxim (Nasdaq: MXIM) reported strong first quarter results, with an EPS of $0.43 and revs of $626.1 million. Guides was in-line to better than Street consensus.

  • Market Vectors Agribusiness ETF (NYSE: MOO) up 0.92% to $50.53. Hong Kong-based greenhouse vegetable producer IPO Le Gaga (Nasdaq: GAGA) may be boosting MOO a little today, as the company's IPO started trading on the Nasdaq. Shares are up a little on the day to about $10.00, after pricing out at $9.50 per share.

  • United States Natural Gas (NYSE: UNG) up 1.60% to $5.72. Cooler-than-normal temps are expected along the East Coast and along the Gulf of Mexico, which may spark an increased demand as consumers turn up the heat. The EIA also noted that stockpiles increased 71 billion cubic feet to $3.754 trillion ending last week.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) down 1.41% to $34.89. GDP numbers today are keeping the U.S. dollar in check, making oil slip a little as the USD is mixed against broader currencies today. Oil, a dollar-denominated commodity, tends to be more expensive as the dollar rises.

  • iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index (NYSE: FXI) down 0.69% to $44.80. Stocks lower as fears are resurfacing that officals may take measures to stem inflation when the October number comes out, as some speculate that prices wil have risens 3.8%, up from 3.6% in September. China's full-year inflation target is 3%.

  • Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy (NYSE: TAN) down 2.88% to $8.44. First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) is seeing some rather large downside today as the company misses Q3 views but increased their FY10 earnings outlook above the Street consensus. Shares are down 8.8% in afternoon trading, causing the ETF to trade lower. Macquarie also downgraded the shares from Buy to Neutral, with a price target increased from $170 to $175.
