With M&A still a major theme, the rumor mill was again in overdrive today. Below is some chatter being discussed on trading desks today:

  • Netezza Corporation (NYSE: NZ) surged 12 percent today as takeover rumors mentioned by analysts are picking up steam. Yesterday, as noted at StreetInsider.com, analysts at Oppenheimer suggested Netezza could be a takeover target from the likes of HP or others to beef up their data warehousing.

  • ArcSight, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARST) fell 7 percent in the final half-hour of trading on reports that the potential sale of the company could have hit a snag.

  • Rumors re-surfaced earlier in the session that New York Times (NYSE: NYT) was the target of a takeover from billionaire and large shareholder Carlos Slim. Slim's camp said it didn't know anything about a takeover of the company. Shares of NYT closed up 8 percent today.

  • Takeover rumors on Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) are picking up steam, with Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) named as a possible suitor.

  • Dendreon Corp. (Nasdaq: DNDN) gained 4 percent today on positive speculation about a CMS review of Provenge.

  • 7-Eleven is the rumored $40/share third party suitor for Casey's General Stores Inc. (Nasdaq: CASY), according to the Wall Street Journal. The offer tops the $38.50 per share offered by Couche-Tard.

  • Other stocks that were the subject of unsubstantiated takeover chatter today were: Constellation Energy Group (NYSE: CEG), Mohawk Industries Inc. (NYSE: MHK), Newell Rubbermaid Co. (NYSE: NWL), and Sohu.com Inc. (Nasdaq: SOHU).
