Rumors, gossip and scuttlebutt dominate even quite trading days. Today is no exception. Below is some chatter being discussed on Wall Street today.

  • Every quarter large hedge funds and other notable investors release their quarterly holdings via 13F filings with the SEC. Carl Icahn has already come out and showed new stakes in Smith & Wesson (Nasdaq: SWHC), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE: APC) and NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG), among others. You can track all this quarter's 13F data here.

  • Compellent Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: CML) and CommVault Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: CVLT) are seeing interest today after 3Par (NYSE: PAR) was taken over by Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) at an 87 percent premium. CML is up 10 percent and CVLT is up 2 percent. NetApp (Nasdaq: NTAP) and EMC (NYSE: EMC) could also come up again in takeover circles as they are direct competitors of 3Par.

  • Analysts at Deutsche Bank see an eventual takeover for Genzyme (Nasdaq: GENZ) completed at $75/share, but said an acquisition could drag for sometime (potentially 2011).

  • Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: CBST) and Northern Trust Corporation (Nasdaq: NTRS) were the subject of unsubstantiated takeover rumors today.
