EMC's (EMC) Joe Tucci Could Be Considerd to Fill Top HP Job

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) is reportedly looking outside of itself to fill the void left by former Chief Executive Officer Mark Hurd, and EMC Corp.'s (NYSE: EMC) CEO Joe Tucci in on the short list of possible candidates.

HP is in need of a new chieftain after Hurd resigned last week after contract employee with the company accused him of sexual harassment.

Tucci is seen as leading candidate to replace Hurd as the head man for HP, the world’s leading maker of personal computers. HP’s $114.6 billion in annual sales makes it a far more attractive company to lead than EMC and its annual sales of $14 billion.

Other candidates from outside of HP that are reportedly in the running include top executives from rival International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) and other tech companies.

According to a report from the Boston Herald, Steve Duplessie, an ex-EMC staffer who now runs the consulting firm Enterprise Strategy Group, Tucci likely will not even want the position.

"I think Joe would be an absolutely terrific choice - except that he won’t do it," Duplessie said. "He’s close enough to retirement and his ego is small enough that I don’t think the job would be attractive to him."

The report added that other EMC executives could be a fit for HP, including President Pat Gelsinger and Vice Chairman William Teuber Jr.

Shares of HP closed the regular market session down 27 cents to $42.33 on Tuesday, while EMC shares closed down 32 cents to $20.15.
