Notable ETF Movers of the Day 07/22: SPY, XLF, USO Higher; VXX, UUP Lower

Gainers

  • SPDRs (NYSE: SPY) up 2.2% to $109.43. Arguably one of the best days (so far) in the month of July, indices are all trading higher today on several earnings beats and raised forecasts out of AT&T (NYSE: T), 3M (NYSE: MMM), and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) today.

  • Financial Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLF) up 2.43% to $14.38. Though many in the financial sector are up above 2% today, focus might be on Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), which is trading just about a percentage point lower today. The company reported second quarter earnings yesterday that sat well with investors, making the stock end about 6.3% higher on the day. Other than that, financials are trading right along with the market, a day after Pres. Obama signed new financial reform into law.

  • United States Oil (NYSE: USO) up 2.92% to $35.20. Notably up today on positive sentiment in China and Europe, as well as strong earnings reports today. Additionally, yesterday the EIA reported a surprise 320K barrel increase for the week ended July 17, 2010. China also surpassed the U.S. as the world's biggest energy consumer this week, though only about 19% of their useage comes from oil.

  • iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (NYSE: VXX) down 4.84% to $24.17. The CBOE VIX is down 5.4% today as investors are getting back into the market amid an increase in continuing claims and lower home sales, as earnings reports and forecasts are finally kicking in.

  • PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish (NYSE: UUP) down 0.87% to $24.02. The U.S. dollar is weaker today on aformentioned economic data, and testimony by Fed Chief Ben Bernanke. Additionally, industrial order in the Eurozone were up 3.8% for May from April, an 2.6% excluding more volatile items such as ship, rails, and aerospace.
