Apple (AAPL) Director Jerry York Passes Away at Age of 71

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) said on Thursday that after reportedly suffering a stroke yesterday, director Jerome York has today passed away.

York, who was 71-years old, served on the board of directors at Apple since joining the company in 1997. Prior to this, York worked for all three Detroit automakers starting in the 1960s and was CFO for Chrysler where he helped pull the automaker out of its first government bailout and into profitability.

The University of Michigan graduate, also held the CFO position at International Business Machine Corp. (NYSE: IBM) in the 1990s.

“Jerry joined Apple’s Board in 1997 when most doubted the company’s future,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “He has been a pillar of financial and business expertise and insight on our Board for over a dozen years. It’s been a privilege to know and work with Jerry, and I’m going to miss him a lot.”

York’s death leaves Apple’s board with only five outside members following the departure last summer of Eric Schmidt, who is now the CEO of Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG).
