According to a report from DealReporter.com, Leap Wireless (NASDAQ: LEAP) appears to be closing in on a deal to explore strategic options with investment banks.

According to sources, the discount wireless provider is in the early stages of merging with other companies in the space.

Consolidation may be on the way for the entire unlimited prepaid service sector -- a sector which offers customers the opportunity to pay ahead of time for phone calls made and not commit to a contract.

MetroPCS Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCS) is another wireless provider that has, in recent months, talked with investment banks about possible deals to merge with a larger company.

Analysts have cited America Movil, Deutsche Telekom or AT&T (NYSE: T) as potential buyers for Leap, which saw its shares soar 8.69 percent to $15.01 near the end of today's market trading.
