Airline stocks are getting beaten up today amid a broad-based sell-off in the major averages. Also affecting stocks in the group today are oil prices which have quietly crept to the highest levels in nearly a year and continued negative sentiment related to Southwest Airline's (NYSE: LUV) disappointing earnings yesterday.
The Claymore/NYSE Arca Airline ETF (NYSE: FAA), cleverly tickered "FAA", is down about 2% today.
Although down about 20 cents today, crude oil has surged about 17% to over $77 during the last month. The last time crude trading around this level was the beginning of November 2008.
