The U.S. government has seen profits of about $4 billion as bailout money is returned from the nation's biggest banks, according to reports form the New York Times. The return is equivalent to about 15% annually, according to calculations.
While the early returns are a positive, it by no means is a full accounting of the massive rescue of the financial system by the U.S. government. The government faces huge potential from the bailouts of AIG (NYSE: AIG), Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM), Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE), General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler.
