Sangamo (SGMO) Surges on Report Stem Cell Transplant Effective In German AIDS Patient

Shares of Sangamo Biosciences Inc. (Nasdaq: SGMO) are higher this morning following reports from Bloomberg a German AIDS patient was able to stop taking his drugs after getting a transplant of stem cells from a donor with a rare, resistant gene.
Sangamo is currently sponsoring its own trial of a gene therapy that aims to modify the immune cells in 12 patients infected with HIV so they lack the CCR5 receptor.
Other stem cell stocks are also higher on the news: Geron Corporation (Nasdaq: GERN) +7%, StemCells Inc. (Nasdaq: STEM) +3.5%, Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASTM) +6.5%.
