Reports Quattrone Advising Google in MSFT/YHOO Takeover Fight

Reports from the New York Times' DealBook, Frank Quattrone is advising Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt related to Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) desire to acquire Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO).
Quattrone recently started the Qatalyst Group after being cleared of obstruction of justice charges last year.

The MSFT/YHOO drama intensified yesterday after Yahoo said it would test paid search ads from rival Google. In addition, today there were reports that Yahoo! and Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX) AOL unit were in talks to combine. Also, Microsoft is reportedly talking with News Corp (NYSE: NWS) about a joint-bid for Yahoo!.

Although many still see Yahoo! eventually being acquired by Microsoft, Yahoo's continued rejection of MSFTs' $31 bid, its refusal to enter serious negotiations, plus the entrance of numerous third parties into the mix, make if far from a 100% certainty.

The YHOO/GOOG paid search ad deal could make GOOG the spoiler here. Google would like nothing more than to take over all the search ads at Yahoo! and see the YHOO deal with Microsoft terminated. [LJ]
