Goldman Sachs analyst Lizzie Dove initiates coverage on Vail Resorts (NYSE: MTN) with a Sell rating and a price target of $132.00.
The analyst comments: “While MTN is a market leader with a high-quality resort portfolio and a differentiated customer proposition, we believe the market is over-estimating the company’s sustainable long-term growth rate, as several of the levers that historically drove outperformance mature. (1) Epic Pass penetration increasingly looks like a mature ecosystem, having captured a significant portion of the addressable core skier base after two decades of multiple acquisitions that increased the value proposition of the pass. From here, incremental growth is increasingly dependent on attracting younger, more price-sensitive and occasional skiers who have historically been harder to convert, against an industry that is growing at sub-population rates. (2) Pricing power is starting to hit a ceiling, with pass units stagnating and new discounts aimed at lower frequency guests, though revenue capture from Epic Experience could provide some offset. (3) MTN’s long-term algorithm of 5-7% organic EBITDA growth looks ambitious, particularly against just ~1.5% organic EBITDA CAGR from 2019-2025. (4) MTN’s 6% dividend yield and >100% FCF payout increasingly constrains capital allocation flexibility, particularly as investments in technology, Epic Experience and snow making remain necessary to support growth. We are not assuming a dividend cut, and we do expect KPIs to rebound somewhat from depressed FY26 levels if snow conditions normalize. However, as consolidation, pass penetration and pricing mature, we believe that the market is over-estimating the long-term growth algo.”
