Horrid November Sales Shows Automaker Struggles

With the U.S. big three automakers submitting their restructuring plans to Congress today, November sales data showed the world just how bad things are for the industry.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) November vehicles sales fell 41% to 154,877.

Ford Motor (NYSE: F) November vehicles sales fell 30.6% to 122,723.

Chrysler LLC November vehicles sales fell 47% to 85,260.

Even foreign automakers saw similar declines:

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. (NYSE: TM) November vehicles sales fell 33.9% to 130,307.

Honda U.S. (NYSE: HMC) November vehicles sales fell 31.6% to 76,233.

Nissan North America (Nasdaq: NSANY) November vehicles sales fell 42.2% to 46,605.

Mercedes-Benz US (NYSE: DAI) November vehicles sales fell 38.2% to 14,102.

Will these numbers hurt or help Detroit's Big 3 when they testify in front of Congress on Thursday? They could help because it drives home the point that they have no other option but bankruptcy. Alternately, it could show a trend that signals that the government will be throwing money down a black-hole with no hope of getting paid back.
