Fires in Brazilian wetlands surge 980%, extreme drought expected Jun 6, 2024 04:17PM

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Fires in Brazil's Pantanal wetlands have surged nearly tenfold so far this year to the highest levels since 2020, when the biome suffered its worst blazes on record.

Wall Street frets over timeline for centralized Treasury clearing Jun 6, 2024 04:11PM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association may ask regulators for more time to implement a rule requiring centralized Treasury clearing as Wall Street faces a 2026 deadline.

Mexican mayor, bodyguard killed by gunmen in ambush Jun 6, 2024 04:09PM

COTIJA, Mexico (Reuters) - The mayor of a western Mexican town was ambushed and killed by gunmen on Monday, shortly after the country elected its first-female president, following what was the bloodiest campaign in the country's history.

Yolanda Sanchez, the mayor of Cotija in the state of Michoacan since 2021, was shot 19 times in the town center, according to the local press.

New York sues over $1 billion crypto frauds targeting immigrants Jun 6, 2024 03:50PM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Attorney General Letitia James sued two cryptocurrency companies and their promoters, saying they defrauded hundreds of thousands of victims out of more than $1 billion by preying on the religious faith of people from Haitian and other immigrant communities.
