PANAMA CITY (Reuters) - Panamanians will elect a new president on Sunday, with eight candidates set to appear on the ballot, and polls showing mixed rankings among the five frontrunners.
The result will be final, as Panama's electoral rules do not require a runoff. Outgoing President Laurentino Cortizo took office with only a two-percentage-point advantage in the last election.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse May Day demonstrators trying to reach Istanbul's main Taksim Square on Wednesday, and Turkish media said dozens of protesters were detained.
President Tayyip Erdogan said on the eve of May Day that Taksim Square, cordoned off by the police, would not be allowed for the annual protests.

(Reuters) - PPL Corp reported first-quarter results ahead of analysts' estimates on Wednesday as the electricity and natural gas utility benefited from lower operating costs and higher transmission revenue.
The company's Kentucky Regulated earnings rose by 3 cents per share in the quarter on higher sales volumes. Earnings from PPL's other two segments, Pennsylvania Regulated and Rhode Island Regulated, also increased.

WARSAW (Reuters) - An unknown assailant hurled a bottle containing a flammable substance at a synagogue in Warsaw early on Wednesday, police said, prompting condemnation from Polish political leaders.
Poland's chief rabbi Michael Schudrich told Reuters that nobody was hurt in the incident, which took place around 1 am (2300 GMT on Tuesday). Police said they had not yet established a motive for the attack.

LISBON (Reuters) - Portugal swung to an unexpected budget deficit of 259 million euros ($276 million) in the first quarter from a surplus of 5.1 billion euros a year ago, the finance ministry said, blaming the previous government for last minute measures that worsened accounts.
