Russian warships to arrive in Havana next week but pose no threat, Cuba says Jun 6, 2024 12:02PM

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba said on Thursday that Russian warships would arrive in Havana next week, but that the four navy ships carried no nuclear weapons and did not present a threat to the region.

"This visit corresponds to the historical friendly relations between Cuba and the Russian Federation and strictly adheres to the international regulations," Cuba`s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Italian stamp honouring fascist founder of Rome soccer club triggers protests Jun 6, 2024 12:01PM

ROME (Reuters) - A commemorative stamp honouring the founder of AS Roma soccer club, who was also an infamous fascist, was unveiled on Thursday at the industry ministry, drawing criticism from Jewish groups and opposition parties.

Italo Foschi founded AS Roma in 1927. He was also an active militant in Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party and involved in several well-documented attacks against political opponents.

European shares close up after ECB delivers first rate-cut in five years Jun 6, 2024 11:59AM

(Reuters) -European shares closed higher on Thursday, boosted by banking, technology and healthcare stocks, though they finished below session highs after the European Central Bank cut lending rates for the first time since 2019 but left the timing of future moves unclear.

The pan-European STOXX 600 closed 0.7% higher, off record high levels hit earlier in the session.

Five nations elected to UN Security Council Jun 6, 2024 11:59AM

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday elected Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia to the 15-member U.N. Security Council for two-year terms starting on Jan. 1, 2025.

The Security Council is the only U.N. body that can make legally binding decisions such as imposing sanctions and authorizing use of force. It has five permanent veto-wielding members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

One year on, Russian officials change tune on tax policy Jun 6, 2024 11:58AM

ST PETERSBURG (Reuters) - The prospect of raising Russia's corporate taxes was criticised by officials at last year's St Petersburg economic forum as a counterproductive move that would suppress investment. This year, those same officials have changed their tune.
