Britain's Conservatives trail Labour by 18 points, says Opinium poll May 18, 2024 03:04PM

LONDON (Reuters) - The opposition Labour Party’s lead over British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s governing Conservative Party has increased to 18 points, according to an opinion poll published on Saturday.

A national election is expected later this year. The poll, conducted by Opinium Research, predicted Labour would take 43% of the vote, versus 25% for the Conservatives.

Its previous poll had given Labour a 16-point lead.

Italian police seize 134 Fiat cars in flag dispute May 18, 2024 02:04PM

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian fiscal police seized more than 130 Fiat cars imported from Morocco this week on the grounds that a sticker with the colours of the Italian flag on their doors could give a false indication of their origin, a spokesman for Stellantis Italia said on Saturday.

Israel's Gantz demands Gaza day-after plan by June 8, threatens to quit cabinet May 18, 2024 01:49PM

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz demanded on Saturday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commit to an agreed vision for the Gaza conflict that would include stipulating who might rule the territory after the war with Hamas.

Residents of Canadian oil town menaced by wildfire can return home May 18, 2024 01:39PM

TORONTO (Reuters) - Residents of the Canadian oil town threatened by an out-of-control wildfire can return home, authorities said Saturday, even as they warned the community will have to contend with the blaze for the foreseeable future.

Thousands of residents of Fort McMurray, in northern Alberta, had been ordered to leave their homes earlier this month. But favourable weather made a return home possible.

Ukraine investigates civilian injuries, battles rage in Kharkiv region May 18, 2024 01:21PM

KYIV (Reuters) -Ukrainian prosecutors said they were investigating attacks on civilians in two cities in the northeastern region of Kharkiv and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported successes by troops fighting a fresh Russian assault there on Saturday.

Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address that Ukrainian forces had grown in confidence, particularly in Kharkiv region.
