(Reuters) - Spirit AeroSystems is laying off several hundred members of its workforce in Wichita, Kan., according to a media report Thursday citing internal documents, as the company deals with high debt and slowed production at Boeing, its key customer.

Tesla gets local council go-ahead for German factory expansion May 16, 2024 02:00PM

GRUENHEIDE, Germany (Reuters) - Tesla got the go-ahead for an expansion of its German factory in Gruenheide near Berlin from the local council on Thursday despite protests against the U.S. electric vehicle maker's plans.

Spain denied port of call to ship carrying arms to Israel May 16, 2024 01:58PM

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain has refused permission for an Israel-bound ship carrying arms to call at the southeastern port of Cartagena, Transport Minister Oscar Puente said on Thursday.

The Marianne Danica was carrying a cargo of arms to Israel and had requested permission to call at Cartagena on May 21, Puente said on X.

It was carrying nearly 27 tons in explosive material from India's Madras, El Pais reported.

Top NATO commander says Russian troop numbers insufficient for Kharkiv breakthrough May 16, 2024 01:54PM

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO's top commander said on Thursday he did not believe Russia's military has deployed enough troops to make a strategic breakthrough in the region around Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine.

General Christopher Cavoli, NATO's supreme allied commander Europe, said he was confident Ukrainian forces would hold their lines in the region.

US defense chief plans to meet with Chinese counterpart in Singapore, US official says May 16, 2024 01:38PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is expected to meet with China's defense minister during a conference in Singapore later this month, a U.S. official said on Thursday.

The meeting will be the first substantial in-person engagement between U.S. and Chinese defense chiefs in two years, though Austin and Chinese defense minister Dong Jun spoke by phone last month.
