TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan envisages the need for electricity output to rise 35% to 50% by 2050 due to growing demand from semiconductor plants and data centres backing artificial intelligence (AI), the government has forecast.

Australian court jails former military lawyer for sharing secret documents with journalists May 13, 2024 11:06PM

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian court has sentenced a former military lawyer to five years and eight months in jail for sharing with journalists classified military documents about the special forces actions in Afghanistan, media reported on Tuesday.

Blinken arrives in Ukraine in show of US solidarity amid Russian attacks May 13, 2024 10:32PM

KYIV (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday in the first visit to Ukraine by a senior U.S. official since Congress passed a long-delayed $61 billion military aid package for the country last month.

The previously undisclosed trip aims to show U.S. solidarity with Ukraine as it struggles to fend off heavy Russian bombardment on its northeastern border.

Lidar maker Hesai sues US government, denies alleged link to China's military May 13, 2024 10:24PM

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -China-based Hesai Group sued the U.S. government on Monday for adding the maker of lidar light sensors to a list of companies allegedly working with Beijing's military.

Hesai, whose lidars help self-driving cars and driver-assistance systems gain a three-dimensional map of the road, was added to the list by the U.S. Department of Defense in January along with over a dozen other companies.

BENGALURU (Reuters) - The Philippine central bank will keep its key policy rate unchanged on Thursday, according to a Reuters poll of economists who now expected the first rate cut to come in the final quarter of this year.
