Kremlin condemns shooting of Fico, wishes him a speedy recovery May 16, 2024 12:58AM

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Kremlin on Thursday condemned the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and wished him a speedy recovery after he was shot when leaving a government meeting.

"Naturally, we condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms," Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestia. "We consider it absolutely unacceptable - this is really a great tragedy."

US soldier held in Russia pleads guilty, RIA agency reports May 16, 2024 12:54AM

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Gordon Black, a U.S. soldier being held in the Russian city of Vladivostok, has pleaded guilty to theft charges and is cooperating with investigators, Russia's RIA state news agencies reported on Thursday.

"He is cooperating (with the investigation), he admitted (guilt)," RIA cited a representative of the local interior ministry as saying.

Black could not be reached for comment by Reuters.

Temu targeted in EU consumer group's complaint to EU tech regulator May 16, 2024 12:37AM

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Chinese fast-fashion e-commerce retailer Temu was hit with a European Union complaint on Thursday, with pan-European consumers group BEUC saying the PDD Group-owned unit might have breached online content rules.

Under the European Union's Digital Services Act, online marketplaces and intermediaries are required to fight illegal and harmful content as well as counterfeit products on their platforms.

SoftBank Corp aims to help call centre workers by 'softening' angry customer calls with AI May 16, 2024 12:21AM

TOKYO (Reuters) - Dealing with irate customers can be extremely stressful for call centre workers but Japan's SoftBank Corp thinks it has a solution: artificial intelligence-enabled software that softens the tone of customers' voices.

The country's third-largest telecoms provider aims to begin testing the technology internally and externally over the next year and commercialise it by the end of March 2026.
