Russian guided bombs hit residential area in Kharkiv, nine injured May 22, 2024 08:08AM

(Reuters) - A Russian air attack on Ukraine's northeastern city of Kharkiv on Wednesday injured at least nine people, at least one severely, and set fire to a residential building, local officials said.

"One of the guided aerial bombs, according to preliminary data, hit a cafe. It is very close to a multi-storey residential building," Serhii Bolvinov, head of the investigative department of the regional police, told national TV.

Ukraine equips naval drones with rocket launchers, Kyiv source says May 22, 2024 08:01AM

KYIV (Reuters) - Ukraine has equipped some of its naval drones with multiple rocket launching systems and used them to fire at Russian positions in combat, a Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters on Wednesday.

Ukraine, which no longer has any significant warships in its fleet, has used uncrewed naval drones packed with explosives to sail up to Russian warships in the Black Sea, detonating on impact.

Defence, social and interest payments limit investment, says German Finance Minister May 22, 2024 07:58AM

BERLIN (Reuters) - Defence, social spending and interest payments are limiting the scope for other investments in the German budget, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Wednesday.

"Our federal budget is characterised by social spending, defence and interest [payments]," Lindner said at the economic Humboldt forum in Berlin. "These are the big blocks."

Qatar Emir, Kuwait foreign minister travel to Iran for Raisi funeral May 22, 2024 07:57AM

DUBAI (Reuters) - Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani headed to Iran on Wednesday to attend the funeral of late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the Emiri Diwan said.

Kuwait's Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali al-Yahya also travelled to Tehran on Wednesday to participate in Raisi's funeral on behalf of the Kuwaiti Emir, the foreign ministry reported.

Israel allows return to three evacuated West Bank settlements May 22, 2024 07:55AM

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli military has approved permission for Israelis to return to three former West Bank settlements they had been banned from entering since an evacuation ordered in 2005, the defence ministry said on Wednesday.

The three settlements, Sa-nur, Ganim and Kadim, are located near the Palestinian cities of Jenin and Nablus, both of which are strongholds of armed militant groups in the northern West Bank.
