WP8 Devices Make Strong Shipment Gain in Q4; Apple Slips (AAPL) (NOK) (MSFT)

The biggest surprise in global smartphone shipments during Q412 might have nothing to do with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android or Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS. It might have all to do with Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows.
According to data out of IDC on Thursday, Android retained the top spot in global smartphone shipments in the most recent quarter. It's share rose 17.2 points to 70.1 percent, while shipments improved 88.0 percent.
Apple's iOS saw a slight drop in market share, moving to 21.0 percent from 23.0 percent in Q411. Shipments for Apple improved 29.2 percent.
BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) took third spot, though shipments fell 43.1 percent while market share slipped 4.9 points to 3.2 percent.
Windows Phone shipments ripped 150 percent while global market share added 1.1 points to 2.6 percent. Despite the impressive number, shipments of Windows Phone units were about 6.0 million in Q412. The news is a boon for Microsoft, as well as Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and HTC. Though HTC is still producing Android-based devices, having made its name in 2011 with strong sales, Nokia is looking for Windows Phone 8 to lead it out of the slums.
