Retail Rundown: April Figures Seem Promising

As today was the first Thursday of the month, retail companies released their sales results for the month of April. Solid results out of Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), Target (NYSE: TGT), TJX (NYSE: TJX), Kohl's (NYSE: KSS), JCPenney (NYSE: JCP) and Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO) boosted stocks just after the open, but by the end of the trading session, momentum deteriorated.
Below are some highlights from just a few of the numerous retail sales reports which were released earlier:

- Wal-Mart - same store sales rose 5% during the month, ex-fuel.
- Target - saw comps rise 0.3% in April.
- Costco (Nasdaq: COST) - April same store sales fell 8%.
- Urban Outfitters (Nasdaq: URBN) - recorded a 7% drop in April comps.
- Aeropostale - comps rose 20% in April. The company also raised its Q1 outlook.
- Kohl's - same store sales were down 6.2% during the month, but the company raised its Q1 outlook.
- TJX - April comps were up 3% during the month. TJX also lifted its Q1 guidance.
- JCPenney - marked a 6.6% drop in comps during April.
