Oracle's (ORCL) Ellison and SAP (SAP) Trade Verbal Blows

June 7, 2012 3:40 PM EDT
Oracle's (NASDAQ: ORCL) outspoken Chief Executive, Larry Ellison, took time out of his day Wednesday to taunt rivals at SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) on twitter.

"Oracle's got 100+ enterprise applications live in the #cloud today, SAP's got nothin' but SuccessFactors until 2020."

After investing billions, Oracle yesterday announced that it is going to launch a suite of services in the cloud, which it called the most comprehensive on the planet.

SAP responded to Ellison's taunt by issuing the following release:

"As usual, you can tell who Oracle is most worried about by the competitors they criticize most. In this case, Larry's crystal ball is cloudy. SAP's strategy offers customers a long-term road map of innovation without disruption. Oracle customers face a difficult upgrade challenge with Fusion, and we invite them to see who can provide the most business value for their investment."

Meanwhile, analyst Richard Davis of Canaccord Genuity commented that the Oracle stretched the definition of cloud to fit the firm's historical strength with on-premise, customized deployments.
