NPR Becomes First All-News Station to Land on Apple (AAPL) iTunes Radio

March 24, 2014 12:26 PM EDT
Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iTunes Radio is getting its first news channel with the addition of National Public Radio (NPR).

Re/code reported Monday that NPR will join iTunes Radio today and will offer a free stream, 24-hours a day. Along with general news segments, NPR will broadcast All Things Considered and The Diane Rehm Show, among others. Local stations should also be able to start broadcasting their own channels within weeks, NPR noted.

NPR, which has been available on the web and mobile apps for some time, attracts 30 million visitors per month.

The move is good for both parties; NPR taps into yet another distribution network and lays claim to being the first news station on iTunes Radio and Apple gets the ability to draw in more listeners who are looking for something more than just music and will be able to retain those music fans looking for a little more variety.

Shares of Apple are up 0.7 percent Monday.
