LG Electronics will produce a version of Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Nexus tablet which is capable of capturing 3-D images.
The WSJ cites Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group on the info. The ATAP is the company's advanced mobile R&D segment.
The effort, called Project Tango, should be consumer-ready by 2015.
LG is currently producing a few thousand versions of the tablet for developers to test out.
What does 3-D imaging do? One user at Google's I/O 2014 conference walked around a building and, using cameras, sensors, and other technology, the tablet produced a 3-D image of the users surroundings. That includes steps in one corner that went up several flights.
One similar demonstration captured the same data inside a home, which also included cupboards and shelves.
ATAP is headed by former DARPA director, Regina Dugan.
Shares of Google are lower in late trading Thursday.
