Facebook (FB) 'Phone' Rumor Gathers Steam Into Special Event

January 14, 2013 1:18 PM EST
Shares of Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) are ticking lower heading into the social networking giant's "special event" Tuesday, despite an upgrade at Deutsche Bank to Buy earlier.

Today, TechCrunch is mulling the distinct possibility that a Facebook Phone will be on display at some point. Conceding that tech chatter is just about out of control these days, some good points that rumors sometimes turn out to be true include the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Phone (the Nexus line) and smaller version of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad (the iPad mini).

TechCrunch was cautious in saying that it doesn't necessarily mean a Facebook-branded device or simply that Facebook will be tapping into existing hardware to show off a new app. Or something else entirely, maybe an entire Facebook operating system. Maybe its a device targeted at emerging markets, something lower-cost than a high-end device.

Facebook could base an OS on Android, that way it will be able to run apps immediately. It might have collaborated with Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) for webOS, or maybe it used new-defunct MeeGo, a one-off that Nokia (NYSE: NOK) stopped developing recently.

Many also suspect that Facebook will be aiming to broaden/officially announce a search engine. Gathering data from mobile users in all aspects of usage (not just limited to Facebook access) would be a smart move for the company.

The event is said to take place at Facebook's headquarters in California, while simultaneously holding an event in London, TechCrunch reported. With most of investor ire centered around Facebook's lack of mobile presence, this will be an interesting even to watch. Even more interesting if speculation plays out.

Shares are down two percent Monday afternoon. The event will start at 10:00am PT (ala - just about every Apple event).
