Could Microsoft (MSFT) Buy Yahoo (YHOO)?

January 10, 2008 10:52 AM EST
One of Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) top dealmakers, Bruce Jaffe, is leaving the software giant to start his own firm. Some are surprised he is leaving, because he's exiting Microsoft at a time when MSFT ostensibly is willing to spend on several high-priced acquisitions.

Part of the reason Microsoft is so willing to spend on acquisitions because it wants to keep pace with the online behemoth, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

Despite one of Microsoft's top dealmakers leaving, it most likely will not slowdown its acquisition binge.

Sources close to Microsoft say the company is still contemplating if it should make last year's informal offer to buy Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) official by going public with its bid. However, Cowen & Co believes the odds of Microsoft buying Yahoo are less than 25%. Cowen said a potential Yahoo-Microsoft combination offers no large, game changing synergies and Google would be the greatest beneficiary of that type of merger.
