China has become an important market for Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and may be a key reason for such strong smartphone sales.
According to Digitimes, citing upstream sources on the information, shipments of the Apple iPhone 6 were 50 million units in Q414 and that number is expected to be flat into Q115. China accounted for 15 to 20 million iPhone 6 shipments and a similar level is expected in the current quarter. Similar numbers are expected for Q2.
That means China will provide Apple with one-third of its total iPhone 6 sales through the middle of this year, which is a pretty significant number.
Notably, save for Samsung devices, Android sales haven't picked up since the launch of the iPhone 6. Sources said most Android smartphone manufacturers are seeing lower year-over-year shipment growth.
Shares of Apple are down 1.7 percent Wednesday afternoon.
