Biggest Gainers in FY12 To-Date Getting Smacked This Week (ARNA) (VVUS) (LCC)

July 20, 2012 12:20 PM EDT
The following is a brief list of stocks that have had the best performance year-to-date, but have been getting hit this week. Numbers are just a snapshot and subject to change as the markets see fit.

Three of the following names have been making rapid moves on weight-management approvals and positive FDA committee comments (Orexigen, VIVUS, and Arena). Those names are all down on the session today as well.

US Airways was getting pumped over a possible takeover of AMR Corp. (OTCBB: AAMRQ), but recent quarterly results from AMR have some speculating on whether or not the deal will go through.

Threshold got a kick in the pants in February after announcing a collaboration agreement with Merck KGaA over TH-302. Positive Phase 2b results for TH-302 kept the momentum going in February, though shares have been flat since early April.

Pharmacyclics has just been like the "smooth jazz" station on your radio dial: easy, breezy, riding the wave. The pharma made gains this year on ibrutinib data, which have been positive.

  • Threshold Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: THLD) - up 485 percent on year, down 7.8 percent for the week.
  • Arena Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ARNA) - up 416 percent for the year, down 9.1 percent for the week.
  • Orexigen (Nasdaq: OREX) - up 293 percent on the year, down 4.4 percent from Monday.
  • Pharmacyclics Inc. (Nasdaq: PCYC) - up 235 percent for the year, down 8.8 percent for the week.
  • VIVUS (Nasdaq: VVUS) - up 164 percent for the year, down 7.0 percent for the week.
