Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may be delving deeper into making its China suppliers more "earth friendly."
The Financial Times reports Thursday Apple has hired an outside auditor to evaluate the environmental practices of its suppliers in China. The move follows a series of critical reports from activists.
Meeting with a coalition of environmental groups in China on Tuesday, Apple said it was engaged in audits of 11 suppliers it found at fault. Apple began the audits in August, amid concerns the coalition would release a sharply critical report of the firms practices.
With CEO Tim Cook's focus on growing Apple's presence in China, the company may be looking to sacrifice some of its famous secrecy behind operations in order to gain favorable positioning in the country.
On aiming to improve the environmental practices and impact from many multinationals, the Chinese coalition initially focused on Apple in January after Apple refused to respond to inquiries. The group put Apple at the bottom of its list of 29 companies in terms of how conscientious they were of their environmental impact. The list included peers like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Samsung, Sharp, and Nokia (NYSE: NOK).
Greenpeace recently released a list of their own "green" rankings, placing Apple ahead of Sony (NYSE: SNE), Samsung, but behind Hewlett-Packard, Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) and Nokia.
