3-D Printers Active; Startup Raises $1M in Just 24 Hours (DDD) (VJET) (SSYS)

April 9, 2014 11:36 AM EDT

3-D printers are active Wednesday as one low-cost startup is garnering some attention.

Behold: the Micro printer.

The printer looks like it will retail for about $299, though early adopters got a special $249 price. Technical specifications include the following [unedited list from the company]:

  • Printer Dimensions: It's a cube, 7.3 in (185 mm) per side.
  • It is lightweight, roughly 2.2 lb (1 kg).
  • It can also be used with any Windows, Mac, or Linux based system.
  • USB-Compatible connection.
  • Supports many different materials: ABS, PLA, Nylon, and more.
  • Filament: standard 1.75mm. Nearly 1/2 lb (225 g) rolls.
  • Standard filament rolls also supported.
  • Removable Print Bed.
  • 50-350 micron layer resolution.
  • 15 micron X and Y positioning accuracy.
  • Dimensions: Print height: 116mm (4.6"). Base Print Area: 109mm x 113mm. Print Area Above 74mm: 91mm x 84mm.
  • M3D software for an effortless, plug-and-play experience.
  • Supports and uses open source software (for advanced users).

The company noted that the 225g of filament is enough to make 45 vases depicted in the promo video. That's a lot of vases.

In any case, names like 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) and Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS) will be selling consumer-level printers near the $1,000 or so for now. That puts the Micro printer at a distinct price advantage.

Another point that can be taken away from this Kickstarter is that demand for 3-D printing exists. The company raised $1 million within its first 24-hours of posting.

Shares of 3D Systems, Stratasys, voxeljet (NYSE: VJET), and ExOne (Nasdaq: XONE) are all positive Wednesday.
