Monetary Policy Summary, May 2024
The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) sets monetary policy to meet the 2% inflation target, and in a way that helps to sustain growth and employment. At its meeting ending on 8 May 2024, the MPC voted by a majority of 7–2 to maintain Bank Rate at 5.25%. Two members preferred to reduce Bank Rate by 0.25 percentage points, to 5%.

U.S. crude oil refinery inputs averaged 15.9 million barrels per day during the week ending May 3, 2024, which was 307 thousand barrels per day more than the previous week’s average. (Reuters) - New proposed federal rules governing marijuana has so far failed to spark fresh buying interest in exchange traded funds (ETFs) tracking the shares of North American cannabis companies, despite strong performance this year.

CAIRO (Reuters) -Hamas said on Monday that it had accepted a Gaza ceasefire proposal from Egypt and Qatar.
The Islamist faction said in a statement that its chief, Ismail Haniyeh, had informed Qatar's prime minister and Egypt's intelligence chief of its acceptance of their proposal.
There were no immediate details over what the agreement entailed.
