Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) unveiled the highly-anticipated iPhone 5 at an event this afternoon in San Fransisco. The device, expected to be the biggest product launch in company history, will go on sale Friday, September 21, with per-orders beginning Friday, September 14.
The iPhone 5 is 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S and the device boasts a number of new features, including an all glass and aluminum body, a 4-inch retina display and A6 chip, which is 2x faster.
The new operating system has over 200 new features including: turn-by-turn navigation; Facebook integration; Passbook organization; and even more Siri® features and languages.
iPhone 5 will support LTE for ultra-fast Internet browsing, downloading and streaming content.
The phone has a redesigned camera with a sapphire crystal lens cover that is thinner and more durable than standard glass with the ability to provide crystal clear image. The camera is capable of producing panorama images of up to 28 megapixels by simply moving the camera across a scene in one smooth motion.
Apple is also introducing a new connecter. The company said the new Lightning™ connector is smaller, smarter and more durable.
iPhone 5 comes in either white & silver or black & slate, and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the 64GB model.
