Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) might be in talks to supply Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone camera component, according to Japan's Nikkeri.

UPDATE - Given that more consumers are using front-cameras on smartphones for video-calling and other purposes, Apple was said to seek-out Sony for its high-definition components.

Sony currently supplies just about all of the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors for current iPhone models. Speculation has the supply volume at around 100 million units annually. Sensor sales are expected to hit $3.47 billion in 2014, excluding any impact from today's speculation.

Sony also recently began supplying batteries for Apple's iPad air tablet, thereby shelving plans to unload the unit.

Production of the camera components might take place at Sony's recently acquired facility from Renesas Electronics. The company is expected to invest ¥35 billion for a 25 percent boost in production capacity.

Shares of Sony are up 1.8 percent.
