Sony (SNE) Creepily Hints at Upcoming 'Smartwatch' Debut

June 21, 2013 10:43 AM EDT
Amid a slew of tech companies looking to cash-in on the non-existent portable, wearable smart device market, Sony (NYSE: SNE) might be next in line.

Engadget pointed out this morning that Sony's Xperia Twitter account posted a cryptic message, stating that one in three smartphone users would like to have "smart wrist wear."

Another message was posted that might appeal to horror movie fans, but not to those that scare easily: "Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock #itstime #MAE13."

(We expected a "Bwahahaha!" following the post, to no avail.)

So, while Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is fine-tuning its Google Glass equipment and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) are working on something else, you can sleep tight knowing that Sony will be the first tech giant debuting a smart watch.

Shares of Sony are up about 0.9 percent today.
