Smartphone Shipments to Climb 27% in FY13, Surpassing Basic, Feature Phones

Amid massive share gains being made over the last few years, the smartphone market will show no signs of slowing.

DisplaySearch said recently that shipments of smartphones will surpass that of basic and feature phones for the first time ever in 2013. The firm said smartphone shipments will hit 937 million in 2013, versus 889 million for basic and feature phones. Shipments were 738 million in 2012.

Looking a little further ahead, global smartphone shipments should growth at a CAGR of 26 percent between 2011 and 2016 to 1.45 billion units.

Key markets in growth will be emerging as download speeds continue to get better and better. China and the Asia-Pacific region will account for 50 percent of shipments in 2013, with China itself accounting for 55 percent of global smartphone shipments for the year.

LTE-enabled smartphones will hold about 23 percent of the total smartphone market by the end of 2013.

Traders will be watching Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Nokia (NYSE: NOK), and others as sales play out.
