Tablets will be all the rage in 2013, but are larger displays going out of style?
According to data from Digitimes, the back-half of 2013 will see increased competition in the 7-inch tablet market, shifting more focus away from 10-inch and larger sizes.
As expected, the biggest competition will be between Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad mini and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based tablets. The iPad mini accounted for 12.5 million of the 19.5 million tablet units shipped for Apple in its most recent quarter, while about 4 million to 4.5 million Google Nexus 7 tablets have moved since its debut in H212.
Last week, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) introduced a 7-inch Slate tablet which runs Android. Base price on that device is about $170.
Coincidentally, late last week it was said that tablets featuring Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8 platform will start shipping from China-based white-boxes in sizes above the 10-inch mark. Digitimes noted that 11.6-inch tablet ex-factory prices could hover around $300. The firm also said that Microsoft might be at a disadvantage in the smaller tablet market given lack of enthusiasm with Windows 8.
