Samsung Looks to Steal Some of Apple's (AAPL) Thunder in September

August 27, 2013 7:37 AM EDT
While Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) may be planning a wearable smartwatch sometime in the future, one notable competitor is prepping to unveil its own wearable device next month.

TheVerge, citing The Korea Times on the news, says that Samsung has confirmed plans to hold an event on September 4th which will see the introduction of its "Galaxy Gear" smartwatch. The device will run on Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android and have a non-flexible display.

It wasn't made clear whether the "Galaxy Gear" smartwatch would be available to the public, or if it just a preliminary idea of what a "wearable concept device" should be.

Samsung will also show off its next "phablet": the Galaxy Note III.

Apple is expected to hold its own event for the debut of the next-generation iPhone on September 10th, so Samsung might be playing a little "me first" game to steal a little bit of Apple's thunder.

Shares of Apple are down about 1 percent Tuesday.
