Nokia (NOK) Won't Bring Latest Smartphone to Key Growth Market Anytime Soon

July 15, 2013 9:22 AM EDT
Nokia (NYSE: NOK) wants to grab more smartphone market share in India, but isn't likely to do it using the latest addition to its Lumia lineup.

India's Economic Times said that trickle-down technology will allow Nokia to include some of the new Lumia 1020 features into its Asha line. While the Lumia smartphone series runs Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phone 8 platform, Asha is still using Nokia's Symbian. Cost of a Lumia 1020 in India would be about 42,000 rupees while its Lumia 920 would run about 32,000 rupees. By comparison, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 5 sells for 45,000 rupees.

Asha phones generally go for 3,000 to 6,000 rupees.

It wasn't made clear which innovations will make it to the Asha line, though imaging and applications will certainly be key items that Nokia will focus on. The company is also working to get lower prices on WP8 devices.

Nokia is down 0.7 percent early.
