Microsoft (MSFT) Bing Search Gains in May, But One Key Datapoint Still Missing...

June 12, 2013 8:22 AM EDT
Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Bing search engine isn't dead yet. Far from it, actually.

According to CNET, citing the latest data available from comScore (Nasdaq: SCOR), Bing notched a 0.1 point U.S. market share gain to 17.4 percent for the three months ended May 2013. Though its not a huge jump, Bing is successfully making a strong case for itself as a contender against market leader Google (Nasdaq: GOOG).

Over the same period, Google had a 0.2 point gain for 66.7 percent of the market.

Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) saw its share slip 0.1 points to 11.9 percent.

In terms of year-over-year search query gains, Bing saw a 29 percent increase, Google's rose 14 percent, and Yahoo! saw a 1 percent move higher.

Notably, mobile device searches aren't included in comScore's data. This is a key point given that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is integrating Bing into the latest update of its Siri voice recognition system.

Shares of Microsoft are indicated for a higher open.
