Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) debut a new "Graph Search" feature. It's part of Facebook's "Three Pillars" system, with the other two being News Feed and Timeline.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted that Facebook has about 1 billion users, 240 billion photos, and 1 trillion connections, so sorting through all that noise is a bit of a challenge.
Privacy will be key and most of the content on Facebook isn't public, Zuckerberg emphasized. The company spends about 10 percent of Facebook's computing power is spent on privacy, which is expected to go up when Graph Search goes live.
Users will be able to get solid info on restaurants in an area, restaurants that friends like, friends that live in a particular area, music that friends enjoy, and so on.
Like a certain game and want to find friends in the area that play it? Run a search.
Need an employee but would rather look for specific attributes and someone you might know already? Run a search.
Really, Facebook notes that you can really refine the search. Example: "People who like Mexican food, are friends with Bob, and have March birthdays." Boom, found.
Graph Search is not akin to Internet search, making the world a safer place for Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), AOL (NYSE: AOL), and other search providers, large and small.
Shares of Facebook are up, but very active as investors aren't sure what to make of the new offering.
